NSIB Hosts 12th BAGAIA Commission Meeting in Abuja: Regional Cooperation in Aviation Safety Takes Center Stage
Abuja, Nigeria — In a major step toward enhancing regional aviation safety, the Nigerian Safety Investigation Bureau (NSIB) yesterday welcomed delegates from across West Africa to Abuja for the 12th Commission Meeting of the Banjul Accord Group Accident Investigation Agency (BAGAIA). The meeting is scheduled to run from July 28 to 30, 2025.
Themed “Celebrating Our Collective Wins in Capacity Building and Aviation Safety Across the Banjul Accord Group (BAG) Region and Beyond,” this year’s gathering underscores the region’s progress and continued commitment to building a safer and more resilient aviation sector.
Opening the session, NSIB emphasized that cooperation among member states is not optional—it is the bedrock of effective air safety management. With aviation incidents knowing no borders, delegates reaffirmed that collaborative, timely, and trust-driven responses are essential to keeping regional skies safe.
Nigeria demonstrated this commitment through recent technical support to Liberia’s Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau and assistance to Ghana in establishing a Flight Data Analysis Laboratory. These efforts are a testament to Nigeria’s resolve in turning regional promises into real, measurable outcomes.
“By hosting this meeting,” a senior NSIB official stated, “Nigeria is reaffirming its leadership in advancing aviation safety across West Africa. We are investing in people, systems, and shared success.”
The meeting brings together member states, including Ghana, The Gambia, Liberia, Cape Verde, Sierra Leone, and Nigeria, all of whom continue to show dedication to a unified regional safety strategy.
As discussions continue through the week, the focus remains on deepening collaboration, enhancing technical capacity, and tackling emerging threats in aviation safety across the region.
Beyond the formal sessions, the Commission Meeting also provides a valuable platform for bilateral engagements, peer learning, and the exchange of best practices. Experts and investigators from member states are using this opportunity to share insights from past investigations, identify common challenges, and explore innovative approaches to accident prevention and safety oversight. The event includes side sessions on emerging technologies in safety data collection and analysis, proactive risk management, and human factors in aviation incidents. These discussions are not only fostering technical growth but also strengthening professional relationships among agencies. Participants agree that such synergy is key to building institutional resilience and enhancing regional capabilities. As the region grapples with increased air traffic and evolving threats, meetings like this are crucial in aligning national efforts with global aviation safety standards and expectations.
